Embark on a snowshoe adventure at Spring Valley

Spring Valley is offering snowshoe rentals a little earlier this year, thanks to a late autumn record snowfall.

Snowshoes may be rented between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Both adult and children’s sizes are available. Recommended ages are 5 and older, depending on the size of the child. Boots must be worn with the snowshoes. Participants are required watch a seven-minute DVD addressing safety and proper wear. Rentals must be returned by 4:30 p.m.

Cost to rent snowshoes is $4 for three hours. Offsite rentals also are available for $10 a day and a $50 deposit. Special weekday rates are available after 3 p.m. for youth groups and other organizations.

Don pajamas and hunt holiday goodies at Safety Park

snow_scBundle up in your coziest PJs and enjoy an exciting hunt for holiday favorites at the Schaumburg Park District’s Safety Park!

Jingles and Jammies takes place 6:30-7:30 p.m., Dec. 10 for children ages 12 and younger. Participants will meet at the Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road, before heading outside to Safety Park in search of treats. Families should bring flashlights and containers or bags for collecting treats. Held rain or snow, the event also will feature games, crafts and hot chocolate.

Registration is $8 for residents and $12 for non-residents.

Splash and play away your Thanksgiving break at the Schaumburg Park District

poolStay active during Thanksgiving break with special hours and activities at the Schaumburg Park District.

The Schaumburg Park District offers plenty to do when  District 54 schools are closed Nov. 25-27. The Community Recreation Center and The Water Works, 505 N. Springinsguth Road; Meineke Recreation Center, 220 E. Weathersfield Way and Schaumburg Tennis Plus, 1416 N. Payne Road, are open on Thanksgiving with limited hours.

Park District hours and activities include:

  • Open swim, noon-8 p.m., Nov. 25 and 27 at The Water Works. Admission is $5 for youth residents ages 3-17, $7 for youth non-residents, $7 for adult residents and $9 for adult non-residents.
  • Adult lap swim, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Nov. 26, at The Water Works.
  •  CRC fitness center will be open 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Nov. 26.
  • Open basketball from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Nov. 26, at Schaumburg Tennis Plus. Non-member cost is $5 for youth residents and $7 for youth non-residents.
  • MRC fitness center will be open 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Nov. 26.
  • Grounds and trails are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Nov. 25 and 27 at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Nature Center exhibits and museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Youth open basketball, 3-6 p.m., Nov. 27, at CRC. Non-member cost is $4 for youth residents and $8 for youth non-residents.
  • Wagon rides are available 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 28 and 29, at Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road. (weather permitting)

Jump and tumble while school is out

sc-gymGymnastics-themed winter break camps at the Schaumburg Park District are the ultimate way to keep children active while school is out.

Offering age-appropriate group activities, three-day Gymnastics Winter Break Camps take place at The Sport Center, 1141 W. Irving Park Road. With plenty of space for tumbling, the facility’s gymnastics center features a beam, vault, pommel horse, pit bars and trampolines. Although the program is for both beginner and intermediate levels, children may be divided according to age, skill levels and/or gender.

Upcoming camps include:

  • 9:30-11 a.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 28-30 (ages 4-8)
  • 9:30-11 a.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 28-30 (ages 9-12)
