Flag_footballWhat’s better than watching football this fall? How about playing the sport?

Registration for the Schaumburg Park District’s Flag Football Skills Program is underway. Offered for children ages 6 to 8, the class helps increase skill level and overall knowledge of the game. Speed and agility drills are used to help will balance, lateral and linear movements and explosiveness from a set stance.

Youngsters also will learn footwork and balance while focusing on quarterback, running back, line play, receiving and defensive tactics. Games and competitions also are included. Contact is minimal and there is no tackling.

Shoot, score, succeed with Schaumburg Park District basketball

SC-basketball-2Learn some fancy footwork, build confidence and stay active through basketball programs with the Schaumburg Park District.

Basketball classes start for participants as young as 4, with league opportunities available for girls ages 11 and older. In Junior Basketball, the sport is taught at a basic level, keeping players engaged with specially-designed exercises and games. The program’s foundation is built on basic mechanics, with larger challenges added as the class progresses.

Half-pint hoopsters introduces kids to the rules and fundamentals of basketball, with participants dribbling, passing, shooting and learning teamwork through drills and games. New this fall, the District also is offering the Wade Heisler Basketball Camp led by Schaumburg High School Boys Head Basketball Coach Wade Heisler.

Girls 11 and older may shoot hoops in the Girls Feeder Basketball League from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday mornings from Nov. 21 to March 26.  Teams may register only at The Sport Center, 1141 W. Irving Park Road.

Dance to your own beat during Zumba Kids

SC-ZumbaOne rule of fitness is that it should be fun.

Offered through the Schaumburg Park District, Zumba Kids gives children ages 7-11 the opportunity to dance to their own beats, rock with friends and have a blast while staying healthy and fit.

Featuring age-appropriate music, this Saturday morning program encourages kids to be fearless on the dance floor and enjoy being themselves. Classes are held at the Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road.

Swap screen time for sports during the Schaumburg Park District’s Family Fun Night

With the average American household boasting 23 tech devices according to, it may sometimes be easy to overindulge in screen time.

The Schaumburg Park District offers an opportunity to turn off TVs, tablets and other devices during Family Fun Night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sept. 19 at The Sport Center, 1141 W. Irving Park Road. Celebrating Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play, the event features an evening of basketball, volleyball, Dodgeball, T-ball, soccer and a preschool tot lot.

The Sport Center also will have its gymnastics area open with obstacle courses for the ultimate in active fun.

Concessions will be available for purchase. Admission is free to Schaumburg Park District residents and $8 for non-residents. The first 200 residents will receive a free give at the door.

Youngsters are flipping for Schaumburg Park District gymnastics

gymnastics_fall_SCFrom team competition to classes allowing tots to jump and bounce in a safe atmosphere, the Schaumburg Park District’s gymnastics program provides multiple options.

Session I classes begin Sept. 8 and run through Oct. 24, with Session II beginning Oct. 26 and continuing through Dec. 18. Team-level classes begin Sept. 8 and run through May 27. Private gymnastics lessons also are available. Classes take place at The Sport Center, 1141 Irving Park Road.

Upcoming class levels include:

•Parent/Tot (ages 2-3)

•Tot (3 and older by September 1, 2015 and potty trained)

•Jr. Gymnastics Beginner (4 years old by Sept. 1, 2015)

•Jr. Gymnastics Intermediate (pre-requisite: Jr. Gymnastics Beginner)

•Girls/Boys Intermediate (Instructor permission required)
